Overview

The MAX1044CPA+ is a monolithic CMOS switched-capacitor voltage converter that can invert, double, divide, or multiply an input voltage. It is widely used to generate a negative supply rail from a single positive input, supporting an input range of 1.5V to 10V. This 8-DIP package version is particularly popular in prototyping and low-power analog circuits where a dual-polarity supply is required from a single battery or DC source.

Why Choose This Part

It offers high efficiency and requires only two external capacitors for standard inversion, eliminating the need for bulky inductors. The inclusion of a BOOST pin allows engineers to increase the internal switching frequency from 10kHz to higher levels, effectively moving switching noise out of the sensitive audio band.

Applications

Analog Rail Generation
Generating a -5V rail from a +5V logic supply to power operational amplifiers and data converters.
RS-232 Power Supply
Providing the bipolar voltage levels required for RS-232 communications in small handheld devices.
Voltage Multiplication
Configuring the device as a voltage doubler to provide higher drive voltages for specific peripheral components.
Battery Powered Tools
Extending the utility of a single 9V battery by providing a negative bias for precision measurement circuitry.

Getting Started

To use this in an inversion circuit, connect the input voltage to Pin 8 and ground Pin 3, while placing 10uF electrolytic capacitors between Pin 2 and Pin 4, and Pin 5 and ground. Ensure the BOOST pin (Pin 1) is tied to V+ if you need to increase the switching frequency for noise-sensitive applications. Because this is a DIP-8 package, it is directly compatible with standard 0.1 inch pitch breadboards and sockets.
