Analog Devices / Maxim Integrated
Phase Locked Loops - PLL PLL/VCO
NRND6,560 in stock

Overview

The MAX2870 is an ultra-wideband phase-locked loop (PLL) with an integrated voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) capable of operating in both integer-N and fractional-N modes. It features a fundamental VCO frequency range of 3000MHz to 6000MHz, which is extended down to 23.5MHz using internal output dividers and buffers. This high-performance frequency synthesizer is designed for demanding RF applications requiring low phase noise and flexible frequency generation.

Why Choose This Part

The device offers exceptional flexibility by supporting both integer and fractional modes with a high-performance PFD and a reference frequency up to 200MHz. It includes dual programmable outputs and manual or automatic VCO selection to optimize phase noise across its wide operating range. Additionally, the chip is compatible with 1.8V control logic and features a low-power shutdown mode, drawing as little as 1uA.

Applications

Wireless Infrastructure
Used in cellular base stations and small cells to provide high-frequency local oscillator signals for frequency conversion.
Test and Measurement
Acts as a wideband signal source for portable and benchtop RF test equipment requiring a broad tuning range.
Satellite Communications
Provides stable frequency synthesis for VSAT and satellite ground station equipment.
Point-to-Point Microwave Links
Generates low-jitter carrier signals for high-capacity digital microwave radio links.

Getting Started

Designers typically use the MAX2870EVKIT evaluation board to verify performance and configure internal registers via a PC-based GUI. The device is controlled through a standard 3-wire SPI interface for programming frequency and power settings. Proper PCB layout with attention to the thermal pad and RF grounding is critical for achieving the specified phase noise performance.
