Overview

The MAX31820MCR+T is a 1-Wire digital thermometer that provides temperature measurements from -55C to +125C with user-selectable resolution from 9 to 12 bits. It communicates over a single-wire bus and can be powered directly from the data line using parasitic power, eliminating the need for an external power supply. Each device features a unique 64-bit serial code, allowing multiple sensors to coexist on the same bus for distributed sensing applications.

Why Choose This Part

The primary advantage is the 1-Wire interface which requires only one port pin for communication and allows for parasitic power mode. It offers high accuracy of +/-0.5C within the 10C to +45C range and includes nonvolatile alarm settings that stay programmed even when the device is powered down. The TO-92 package provides a familiar form factor for through-hole mounting and easy integration into various mechanical assemblies.

Applications

HVAC Environmental Controls
Monitoring and regulating ambient temperatures in residential and commercial building automation systems.
Industrial Equipment Monitoring
Tracking thermal performance inside machinery or enclosures to prevent overheating and ensure operational safety.
Distributed Temperature Sensing
Using the 1-Wire multidrop capability to network several sensors over long distances with minimal wiring.

Getting Started

Integration requires a microcontroller with a 1-Wire master implementation and a 4.7k ohm pull-up resistor on the data line. Because it is software compatible with the DS18B20, most standard 1-Wire libraries for Arduino or ARM platforms can be used to read the scratchpad memory and initiate temperature conversions. Ensure the supply voltage remains between 3V and 3.7V for stable operation.
