Overview

The MAX31856MUD+T is a high-precision thermocouple-to-digital converter designed to simplify temperature measurement with eight different thermocouple types. It integrates cold-junction compensation and a 19-bit analog-to-digital converter to provide linearized temperature data over a wide operating range of -55C to 125C. The device handles the complex math of thermocouple linearization internally, outputting digital data directly via a standard SPI interface.

Why Choose This Part

This IC provides integrated 50Hz/60Hz noise rejection and 45V input protection, which are essential for robust performance in electrically noisy industrial environments. It eliminates the need for external lookup tables or complex firmware by providing automatic linearization for types J, K, N, R, S, T, B, and E.

Applications

Industrial Process Control
High-accuracy monitoring of ovens, furnaces, and chemical reactors where multiple thermocouple types may be used.
HVAC System Management
Precise temperature sensing in environmental control systems requiring long-term stability and noise rejection.
Precision Laboratory Equipment
Used in scientific instrumentation where 19-bit resolution and internal linearization are critical for repeatable results.

Getting Started

Engineers can evaluate the device using the MAX31856EVKIT board, which provides a complete USB-to-SPI interface for testing. Implementation requires connecting a thermocouple to the differential inputs and interfacing the 14-TSSOP package with a microcontroller via SPI at a VDD range of 3.0V to 3.6V.
