Texas Instruments
2/2 Transceiver Full RS232 16-SOIC
NRND8,287 in stock

Overview

The MAX3232EIDWR is a dual-channel RS-232 line driver and receiver designed for high-performance serial communication. It operates from a wide supply voltage range of 3V to 5.5V and uses a low-power charge pump to maintain RS-232 output levels while consuming only 0.3mA typical supply current. This transceiver is capable of data rates up to 250kbps and features 300mV of receiver hysteresis for improved noise immunity.

Why Choose This Part

The device offers excellent power efficiency with a typical no-load supply current of just 0.3mA at 3.3V. It provides high ESD protection for harsh environments and is pin-compatible with high-speed alternatives like the SNx5C3232 for easy performance scaling. The dual-channel configuration supports full-duplex communication with standard UART hardware.

Applications

Industrial Controller Interfacing
Connecting 3.3V or 5V microcontrollers to legacy industrial equipment using RS-232 serial ports.
Diagnostic Ports
Providing a robust serial interface for field service diagnostics in embedded systems.
Point-of-Sale Terminals
Managing serial data communication between terminal hardware and peripheral devices like barcode scanners.
Networking Equipment
Acting as a console port transceiver for routers, switches, and server management modules.

Getting Started

To use this device, connect four external 0.1uF charge-pump capacitors as specified in the datasheet to generate the required RS-232 voltage levels. Ensure the Vcc supply is decoupled with a 0.1uF capacitor and place the transceiver close to the DB9 or header connector to minimize noise. No software configuration is required as the device operates as a transparent physical layer translator.
