Overview

The MAX3232EPE+ is a dual-channel RS-232 transceiver designed to bridge the gap between low-voltage logic (3.0V to 5.5V) and standard RS-232 serial communication levels. It features a proprietary low-dropout transmitter output stage and a dual charge pump that enables true RS-232 performance from a single supply while maintaining low power consumption. This specific variant comes in a 16-pin Plastic DIP package, making it ideal for prototyping and through-hole assembly.

Why Choose This Part

The MAX3232EPE+ is highly efficient, requiring only four small 0.1uF external capacitors to operate the charge pump. It supports data rates up to 1Mbps, which is significantly higher than standard RS-232 requirements, ensuring no bottleneck for high-speed UART applications. The DIP package provides a robust mechanical connection and easy replacement for maintenance-heavy industrial applications.

Applications

Legacy Equipment Interfacing
Connecting modern 3.3V or 5V microcontrollers to older industrial hardware, PLCs, or CNC machinery that requires RS-232 voltage levels.
Breadboard Prototyping
Using the through-hole DIP package to quickly validate serial communication circuits without needing an SMD adapter.
Diagnostic Ports
Implementing rugged serial console access for embedded systems used in field environments.
Point-of-Sale Terminals
Managing data transfer between controllers and RS-232 peripherals like barcode scanners or receipt printers.

Getting Started

To use this part, connect VCC to your 3.0V to 5.5V logic supply and ground the GND pin. Place four 0.1uF ceramic capacitors between the charge pump pins as specified in the datasheet (C1, C2, V+, and V-). Connect your microcontroller UART TX/RX pins to the T1IN/R1OUT pins and the external RS-232 cable to the T1OUT/R1IN pins.
