Overview

The MAX485CSA+ is a low-power, half-duplex RS-422/RS-485 transceiver from Maxim Integrated. It provides one driver and one receiver, supports data rates up to 2.5 Mbps, and operates from a 4.75 V to 5.25 V supply. The device comes in an 8-pin SOIC surface-mount package and includes a receiver hysteresis of 50 mV for improved noise immunity.

Why Choose This Part

Choose the MAX485CSA+ when you need a compact, industry-standard RS-485/RS-422 transceiver that runs from a 5 V rail and supports up to 2.5 Mbps. Its 50 mV receiver hysteresis improves stability on noisy long runs, and the SOIC-8 footprint is compatible with common PCB layouts and many pin-compatible alternatives.

Applications

Industrial communications
Long-distance multi-drop links in factory automation and PLC networks using RS-485 or RS-422 physical layers.
Building automation
HVAC, lighting and access control networks that use Modbus or custom RS-485 protocols.
Embedded serial interfaces
Connecting microcontrollers to remote sensors, motor controllers, or other nodes over differential serial lines.
Data acquisition systems
Wired networks collecting sensor data where noise rejection and robust differential signaling are required.

Getting Started

There is no dedicated development board for simple transceivers; start by wiring the differential A/B pair with a single 120 ohm termination at each end of the bus and provide fail-safe biasing (pull-up on A, pull-down on B) or a bias network. Use the microcontroller UART to send/receive data and control transmit direction with the DE/RE pins (drive DE high to transmit, DE low and RE low to receive). Verify ground continuity between nodes and add transient protection or TVS diodes if the installation is exposed to high EMI or surge risk.
