MAX680CPA

MAX680CPA

Maxim Integrated (Analog Devices)
Another Maxim charge-pump inverter/doubler in a similar family and package that can replace or compare with the MAX660 for low-current negative or doubled rails.

Overview

The MAX680CPA is a monolithic CMOS charge-pump voltage converter that generates both positive and negative supply rails from a single input voltage. Operating from a 2V to 6V input, it provides a +10V and -10V output (at 5V input) without the need for inductors, requiring only four external capacitors.

Why Choose This Part

The device offers a high 95 percent voltage-conversion efficiency and 85 percent power-conversion efficiency, minimizing thermal dissipation. Its integrated design replaces two separate charge pumps, reducing component count and saving PCB real estate in space-constrained designs.

Applications

Dual-Rail Op-Amp Supplies
Generating bipolar +/-10V rails from a single 5V logic supply to power analog precision circuits and operational amplifiers.
RS-232 Line Drivers
Providing the necessary positive and negative voltage levels for serial communication interfaces in low-power systems.
Handheld Instrumentation
Creating split-rail power for sensors and data acquisition systems in battery-powered portable devices where space is limited.

Getting Started

To implement the MAX680CPA, connect four 10uF polarized capacitors to the C1, C2, C3, and C4 pins as specified in the datasheet. Ensure the input voltage does not exceed the 6.2V absolute maximum to prevent CMOS latch-up, and keep capacitor leads short to minimize ripple at the 8kHz switching frequency.
