Overview

The MC7805BD2TR4G is a monolithic integrated positive voltage regulator designed for a wide range of applications requiring a fixed 5V output. This robust linear regulator can deliver output currents in excess of 1A and includes internal current limiting, thermal shutdown, and safe-area compensation. It is housed in a surface-mount D2PAK package, making it suitable for automated assembly in industrial and consumer electronics.

Why Choose This Part

The device features a high Power Supply Rejection Ratio (PSRR) of 68dB at 120Hz, ensuring clean power for sensitive electronics. Its integrated thermal overload and short-circuit protection make it nearly indestructible under standard operating conditions. The D2PAK package provides excellent thermal dissipation for a surface-mount component while supporting up to 35V maximum input voltage.

Applications

Fixed-Voltage Regulation
Providing a stable 5V rail for digital logic, microcontrollers, and sensors from a higher voltage DC source.
On-Card Regulation
Eliminating distribution problems associated with single-point regulation by regulating voltage locally on individual system boards.
Current Source
Configuring the device with an external resistor to provide a constant current output for specialized charging or signaling circuits.

Getting Started

When integrating this LDO, place a 0.33uF ceramic or tantalum capacitor on the input and a 0.1uF capacitor on the output to ensure high-frequency stability. Ensure the PCB copper pour connected to the D2PAK tab is sized sufficiently to dissipate heat based on the expected voltage drop and load current. Refer to the onsemi datasheet for thermal resistance calculations to prevent premature thermal shutdown.
