Overview

The MC7805CTG is a robust linear voltage regulator designed to provide a stable 5V positive output at currents up to 1A. It is a industry-standard solution for local, on-card regulation, featuring built-in thermal overload protection and short-circuit current limiting to ensure system reliability. This TO-220 packaged device is highly versatile and requires no external components for basic operation, making it a staple for power supply design.

Why Choose This Part

This regulator offers internal thermal overload protection and output transistor safe-area compensation, making it nearly indestructible under standard operating conditions. Its high ripple rejection of 83dB at 120Hz provides clean power for sensitive electronics, while the TO-220 package allows for easy heatsink mounting in high-power dissipation scenarios.

Applications

Local On-Card Regulation
Eliminates distribution problems associated with single-point regulation in complex multi-board systems.
Fixed Voltage Power Supplies
Provides a reliable 5V rail for digital logic, microcontrollers, and sensors from an input source up to 35V.
Adjustable Output Circuits
Can be configured with external components to provide adjustable voltages or as a constant current regulator.
Instrumentation and Control
Used in sensitive analog or digital circuits where a high PSRR of 83dB is beneficial for noise rejection.

Getting Started

To use the MC7805CTG, connect the input pin to a DC source between 7V and 35V and the ground pin to your common rail. While not strictly required for operation, it is best practice to place a 0.33uF ceramic capacitor on the input and a 0.1uF capacitor on the output to improve high-frequency stability and transient response. If the voltage differential or current load is high, ensure the device is attached to a suitable heatsink to stay within the 0 to 125 degrees Celsius operating range.
