Overview

The MCP1700 is a CMOS low-dropout (LDO) voltage regulator designed for low-power applications requiring a stable 3.3V output from an input up to 6V. It is characterized by an extremely low quiescent current of 1.6uA typical, making it ideal for devices that spend the majority of their time in sleep mode. The device can deliver up to 250mA of current with a low maximum dropout voltage of 0.35V at full load.

Why Choose This Part

The primary advantage is the 1.6uA quiescent current, which significantly extends battery life in always-on applications compared to standard LDOs. It maintains stability with only 1uF of ceramic output capacitance and includes integrated overtemperature and short-circuit protection. The AEC-Q100 qualification also makes it suitable for specific automotive sub-systems requiring high reliability.

Applications

Battery-Powered IoT Nodes
Provides efficient power regulation for sensors and microcontrollers that must operate for years on a single battery cell.
Smoke and CO Detectors
Used in safety equipment where low standby current and long-term reliability are critical design requirements.
Smart Battery Packs
Integrates into battery management systems to provide a stable reference or logic rail with minimal parasitic drain.
Portable Medical Devices
Powers handheld diagnostic tools and wearables that require a small SOT-23 or DFN footprint.

Getting Started

To implement the MCP1700, place a 1uF ceramic capacitor as close as possible to both the input and output pins for stability. Ensure the input voltage remains between 2.3V and 6V for a 3.3V fixed output. For prototyping, the TO-92 package variant (MCP1700-3302E/TO) is compatible with standard 0.1-inch pitch breadboards.
