Overview

The MCP1727-1802E/SN is a 1.5A low dropout (LDO) linear regulator from Microchip Technology designed to provide a fixed 1.8V output. It features high current capability and low quiescent current, making it suitable for modern digital circuits requiring stable power with minimal overhead. The device includes a Power Good output and an Enable pin for sophisticated power sequencing in multi-rail systems.

Why Choose This Part

The MCP1727 offers a very low shutdown current of 0.1 uA and a quiescent current of 120 uA, maximizing efficiency in standby modes. It provides robust protection with integrated short-circuit current limiting and overtemperature shutdown. The inclusion of a Power Good signal simplifies the implementation of power-on-reset and sequencing logic without extra components.

Applications

Microprocessor Core Power
Provides a stable 1.8V rail for CPU cores and high-speed I/O interfaces requiring up to 1.5A of current.
FPGA and DSP Supply
Delivers clean, low-noise power for digital signal processors and FPGA auxiliary rails that are sensitive to voltage fluctuations.
Networking Equipment
Ideal for powering communication ICs in routers and switches where local regulation from a 2.5V or 3.3V bus is required.
Optical Modules
Used in transceivers and fiber-optic components where a small 8-SOIC footprint and thermal stability are essential.

Getting Started

To implement this regulator, place a minimum 1.0 uF ceramic output capacitor close to the VOUT and GND pins for stability. Connect the PWRGD pin to a pull-up resistor if system monitoring is required, and use the SHDN pin to manage power states via a microcontroller GPIO. Ensure the 8-SOIC thermal pad or pins have adequate copper pour area to dissipate heat when operating near the 1.5A limit.
