Overview

The MCP4912-E/P is a dual-channel 10-bit digital-to-analog converter with an integrated rail-to-rail output amplifier and SPI interface. It features external voltage reference pins and a selectable unity or 2x gain output, allowing for flexible voltage scaling in precision control applications. Designed to operate from 2.7V to 5.5V, it provides a low-power solution for systems requiring accurate analog signal generation.

Why Choose This Part

The 14-PDIP package makes this part ideal for breadboarding and through-hole prototyping. It offers a fast typical settling time of 4.5us and includes a hardware shutdown pin that reduces current consumption to just 2uA. The use of an external reference allows for ratiometric measurements or high-precision scaling independent of the VDD supply.

Applications

Set Point or Offset Trimming
Adjusting the bias points and reference levels in precision analog circuits to compensate for component tolerances.
Motor Control Feedback Loop
Generating reference voltages for motor speed controllers or positioning systems requiring 10-bit resolution.
Digitally-Controlled Multiplier
Utilizing the external reference input as a signal input to multiply an analog voltage by a 10-bit digital value.
Calibration of Optical Devices
Precise control of laser diode currents or optical modulator biasing in communication hardware.

Getting Started

To interface with the MCP4912, configure your microcontroller for SPI Mode 0,0 or 1,1 and use a pull-up resistor on the LDAC pin if simultaneous dual-channel updates are not required. Ensure a decoupling capacitor is placed close to the VDD pin and the external VREF inputs are stable to maintain the +/-1 LSB INL accuracy.
