Overview

The MCP6004-I/P is a quad-channel, general-purpose operational amplifier featuring rail-to-rail input and output swing. It operates over a low supply voltage range of 1.8V to 6V while maintaining a low quiescent current of 100uA per channel, making it ideal for battery-powered applications. This specific variant comes in a 14-pin through-hole PDIP package, which is highly accessible for prototyping and educational use cases.

Why Choose This Part

The MCP6004-I/P is designed for low-power, single-supply operation with an input voltage range that extends 0.3V beyond the supply rails. Its 0.6V/us slew rate and stable unity-gain performance provide reliable operation for a variety of cost-sensitive analog signal conditioning tasks. The through-hole PDIP package allows for easy manual assembly and use with standard solderless breadboards.

Applications

Photodiode Amplifiers
Utilizes the extremely low 1 pA input bias current to convert small sensor currents into measurable voltages.
Active Analog Filters
The 1 MHz Gain Bandwidth Product (GBWP) supports the design of low-pass and band-pass filters in the audio and sensor frequency range.
Battery-Powered Instrumentation
Low 100uA supply current per amplifier extends operating life in portable equipment and handheld devices.
Signal Buffering
Rail-to-rail capability allows for maximum dynamic range when buffering signals for 3.3V or 5V ADC inputs.

Getting Started

For prototyping, plug the 14-pin PDIP directly into a solderless breadboard and bypass the supply rails with 0.1uF ceramic capacitors located close to the VDD pin. Ensure the supply voltage remains between 1.8V and 6V to prevent damage. Since this is a quad-channel part, unused amplifiers should be configured as voltage followers with the non-inverting input tied to a mid-supply reference to prevent oscillations.
