Overview

The MCP9808 is a high-accuracy digital temperature sensor capable of converting temperatures between -40C and +125C to a digital word with 0.0625C resolution. It features user-programmable registers for flexible temperature monitoring, including a dedicated Alert output that triggers when user-defined thresholds are breached.

Why Choose This Part

The MCP9808 offers industry-leading accuracy of +/-0.5C maximum from -20C to +100C, reducing the need for system-level calibration. Its integrated power-down mode and wide 2.7V to 5.5V operating range simplify integration into both low-voltage mobile designs and standard 5V industrial systems.

Applications

Industrial Freezers and Refrigeration
Precise thermal monitoring in cold chain logistics where maintaining specific temperature windows is critical for product integrity.
Enterprise Computing and Servers
Local ambient temperature sensing on motherboards and line cards to manage fan speeds and prevent thermal throttling.
Handheld Battery-Powered Devices
The ultra-low 0.1uA typical shutdown current makes it ideal for portable equipment that must conserve power between readings.

Getting Started

Engineers can interface with the MCP9808 via a standard 2-wire I2C or SMBus compatible bus, utilizing the three address pins to support up to eight devices on a single bus. Evaluation can be performed using the MCP9808 Evaluation Board or by connecting the MSOP-8 package to any microcontroller with I2C support, such as a PIC or Arduino-compatible board.
