Overview

The MTCH101-I/OT is a single-channel proximity detector that provides a turnkey solution for adding capacitive touch or proximity sensing to a design. It operates without the need for external software or complex microcontrollers, offering an open-drain output that changes state when a sensor detects human presence. With a supply voltage range of 2V to 5.5V and power consumption as low as 340uA, it is ideal for low-power and battery-operated devices.

Why Choose This Part

The primary advantage of this device is its plug-and-play nature, requiring no external components for basic operation and no firmware development. It features automatic environmental compensation and adjustable sensitivity, ensuring reliable detection even in noisy environments or through varying material thicknesses. The low-power mode significantly reduces current draw to as low as 30uA at 2.0V, making it suitable for always-on sensing applications.

Applications

Hidden Light Switches
Enables the creation of touch-sensitive light switches behind non-conductive materials like plastic or glass for sleek, waterproof panel designs.
Portable Device Wake-up
Triggers a system wake-up from low-power sleep modes when a user approaches or picks up a handheld device.
Appliance Proximity Sensing
Activates backlight LEDs or control panels on white goods only when a hand is nearby to reduce idle energy consumption.
Mechanical Button Replacement
Replaces traditional mechanical switches with robust, solid-state proximity sensing to eliminate wear and tear.

Getting Started

Evaluation can be performed using the MTCH101 Evaluation Kit (AC164154). To integrate the chip, connect a capacitive electrode to the MTI pin and use the MTO pin to drive an LED or interrupt a microcontroller. Sensitivity is adjusted by changing the value of a resistor on the MTSA pin to tune the detection range for specific overlay materials.
