PCA82C251
Overview
The PCA82C251 is a CAN transceiver designed for high-speed applications up to 1 MBd, specifically optimized for 24V systems like trucks and buses. It serves as the physical interface between a CAN protocol controller and the physical bus lines, providing differential transmit and receive capability. This legacy-compatible device includes slope control features to minimize RFI and is robust against short circuits and thermal overloads.
Why Choose This Part
The device features a dedicated slope control mode that allows engineers to tune the transition speed of the bus levels to reduce RFI. It is highly robust, offering protection against short circuits to battery or ground within a -36V to +36V range. Additionally, its low-power Standby mode reduces current consumption to a typical 275 uA while maintaining the ability to monitor the bus.
Applications
Getting Started
To implement the PCA82C251, connect the TXD and RXD pins to your microcontroller's CAN controller and pull the Rs pin to ground for high-speed operation or through a resistor to adjust the slope. Ensure a stable 5V supply is provided to Vcc and place a 100nF decoupling capacitor close to the power pins. For hardware evaluation, this transceiver can be integrated into custom PCBs using the standard SO8 footprint or used with generic CAN breakout boards.
