Overview

The PCA9530DP is a 2-bit I2C and SMBus compatible LED dimmer optimized for red/green/blue (RGB) color mixing and backlight applications. It features two open-drain outputs capable of sinking 25mA each, with internal programmable PWM generators that allow for independent dimming and blinking rates. This device operates over a wide voltage range of 2.3V to 5.5V and includes a hardware reset pin for system-level control.

Why Choose This Part

It reduces processor overhead by offloading PWM generation to the IC, requiring only simple I2C commands to set frequency and duty cycle. The hardware RESET pin and noise filters on the SCL/SDA lines ensure robust operation in noisy electrical environments. Additionally, the device supports hot insertion and features very low standby current of approximately 1.9uA.

Applications

LCD Backlighting
Providing precise brightness control for small liquid crystal displays in portable electronics.
RGB Status Indicators
Driving multi-color LEDs to provide visual feedback for system status or battery levels.
Keypad Illumination
Managing uniform lighting across tactile buttons in industrial or consumer interfaces.
I2C GPIO Expansion
Using the open-drain outputs as general-purpose logic level shifters or small load switches.

Getting Started

To implement the PCA9530DP, connect the SCL and SDA lines to an I2C controller with pull-up resistors and tie the RESET pin high for normal operation. Software integration involves writing to the internal registers to define the frequency and duty cycle for the two PWM channels. For prototyping, NXP's I2C-bus evaluation boards or generic TSSOP-8 breakout boards can be used with any microcontroller supporting 400kHz I2C.
