Overview

The PCA9635PW is an I2C-bus controlled 16-channel LED driver optimized for LCD backlighting and RGB/RGBA color mixing applications. Each of the 16 LED outputs has its own 8-bit resolution (256 steps) fixed frequency individual PWM controller that operates at 97 kHz with a duty cycle programmable from 0 percent to 99.6 percent. It features a Fast-mode Plus I2C interface that supports speeds up to 1 MHz and a high output current capability of 25 mA per channel.

Why Choose This Part

This driver offers significant I2C bus efficiency by providing a Software Reset feature and four programmable I2C-bus addresses to allow groups of devices to be addressed simultaneously. The 25 mA open-drain outputs with 5.5 V tolerance allow for direct driving of LEDs without additional transistors, and the edge rate control on outputs helps minimize EMI during high-speed switching.

Applications

RGB LED Color Mixing
Utilizing individual PWM control for each channel to achieve precise color transitions and static color generation in decorative lighting.
LCD Backlighting
Providing uniform dimming across multiple LED strings with 256-step linear brightness control.
Status Indicator Arrays
Managing complex front-panel LED matrices in industrial or networking equipment using a single I2C bus.

Getting Started

To begin development, connect the PCA9635PW to an I2C master such as an MCU or FPGA using the SDA and SCL lines with appropriate pull-up resistors. Configure the 7 hardware address pins to set the device identity on the bus and use the Active LOW Output Enable (OE) pin for hardware-level global dimming or emergency shut-off. Libraries for standard I2C LED controllers are widely available for platforms like Arduino and Raspberry Pi to simplify register configuration.
