Overview

The PCF8563T/5,518 is a CMOS real-time clock and calendar optimized for low power consumption. It provides year, month, day, weekday, hours, minutes, and seconds information over an I2C-bus and includes an integrated oscillator capacitor to reduce external component count. The device features a wide operating voltage range from 1V to 5.5V, making it suitable for both legacy 5V systems and modern low-voltage battery-operated devices.

Why Choose This Part

This RTC is highly efficient with a maximum timekeeping current of 0.75uA at 5V and can operate down to 1.0V. It simplifies PCB layout by integrating the oscillator capacitor and offers flexible interrupt capabilities via an open-drain pin for alarms and timer overflows. The inclusion of a century flag also aids in long-term date management for software stacks.

Applications

Electronic Metering
Provides accurate time-stamping for utility meters and energy monitoring systems where long-term battery operation is critical.
Mobile Telephony
Used as a system clock to maintain time and date during main battery swaps or deep sleep modes.
Portable Instrumentation
Ideal for handheld data loggers that require wake-up alarms and periodic timer functions to conserve power.
Battery Powered Products
Serves as a high-efficiency timekeeper for consumer electronics that must maintain time for years on a coin cell.

Getting Started

To evaluate this IC, connect the SDA and SCL pins to an I2C master with 4.7k ohm pull-up resistors and attach a standard 32.768 kHz quartz crystal across the OSCI and OSCO pins. Ensure the decoupling capacitor is placed close to the VDD pin, and use the open-drain INT pin to wake up a microcontroller from sleep mode. Standard I2C libraries for PCF8563 are widely available for most embedded platforms.
