Overview

The PCF8563TS is a CMOS Real-Time Clock (RTC) and calendar optimized for low power consumption, featuring an integrated oscillator capacitor and a wide operating voltage range of 1.0V to 5.5V. It provides standard timekeeping functions including seconds, minutes, hours, days, weekdays, months, and years with a century flag. The device communicates via a standard I2C-bus and includes programmable clock output, interrupt, and timer functions.

Why Choose This Part

The IC features an exceptionally low power profile and an integrated oscillator capacitor, reducing the external bill of materials and PCB footprint. It includes a built-in voltage-low detector to warn the system of potential power failure, and its programmable CLKOUT pin provides a stable frequency source for other system components.

Applications

Battery-Powered Handheld Devices
Utilizes extremely low current consumption (225 nA typical at 2.0V) to extend battery life in portable electronics.
Industrial Data Logging
Reliable time-stamping for sensor data using the integrated alarm and timer functions over an industrial temperature range.
White Goods and Home Appliances
Provides a cost-effective timekeeping solution for ovens, washing machines, and HVAC controllers.
Utility Meters
Ideal for electricity and water meters that require accurate time tracking for multi-tariff billing.

Getting Started

To begin development, connect a 32.768 kHz quartz crystal to the OSCI and OSCO pins and pull up the I2C SDA and SCL lines. Configure the control registers via I2C to initialize the clock and use the INT pin for wake-up events. Many microcontroller platforms, including Arduino and ESP32, have existing software libraries for the PCF8563 family.

Also Consider

DS1307 Maxim Integrated / Analog Devices - A widely used 5V RTC with 56 bytes of non-volatile RAM, though it lacks the lower-voltage operation of the PCF8563.
