Overview

The PI6C557-05BLE is a high-performance PCIe 3.0 compliant clock generator designed to provide four HCSL differential outputs from a 25MHz crystal or clock input. It operates from a 3.3V supply and supports frequencies up to 200MHz, making it suitable for high-speed serial communication interfaces. The device includes integrated spread spectrum capabilities to assist in reducing electromagnetic interference (EMI) in sensitive digital systems.

Why Choose This Part

The 1:4 output ratio reduces the need for external clock buffers, saving board space and reducing power consumption. Integrated spread spectrum options (down spread and center spread) provide a hardware-based method to meet strict EMC requirements without software overhead. It offers flexible output signaling, supporting both HCSL and LVDS compatible levels to match various processor requirements.

Applications

PCIe Clock Distribution
Provides synchronized 100MHz reference clocks for PCIe Gen1, Gen2, and Gen3 root complexes and endpoints.
Gigabit Ethernet Networking
Generates low-jitter timing signals for high-speed Ethernet controllers and network interface cards.
Embedded Computing
Serves as a centralized clock source for industrial motherboards and COM Express modules requiring multiple differential pairs.
Storage Area Networks
Delivers stable frequency references for NVMe over PCIe storage controllers and SAS/SATA interfaces.

Getting Started

When designing the PCB, place the 25MHz crystal as close as possible to the X1 and X2 pins to minimize parasitic capacitance. Use 50-ohm controlled impedance traces for the differential HCSL pairs and ensure proper termination (typically 33 ohms in series and 50 ohms to ground at the source or load) as per PCIe specifications. Frequency and spread spectrum modes are configured via the S0, S1, and SS_EN hardware pins, which should be strapped high or low at power-up.
