Overview

The R-78E5.0-0.5 is a high-efficiency switching regulator module designed to be a pin-compatible drop-in replacement for standard TO-220 78-series linear regulators. It converts input voltages between 7V and 28V down to a stable 5V output at up to 500mA without the need for an external heat sink. This non-isolated DC-DC converter offers significantly higher efficiency, reaching up to 92% at minimum input voltage.

Why Choose This Part

The module features continuous short-circuit protection with automatic recovery and a low quiescent current of 1.5mA. Its SIP3 package and 2.54mm pin pitch allow it to fit directly into standard linear regulator footprints, while its high efficiency of up to 95% eliminates the need for fans or heavy cooling infrastructure.

Applications

Linear Regulator Replacement
Upgrading existing 7805 linear regulator designs to improve thermal performance and eliminate bulky heat sinks.
Battery-Powered Systems
Extending battery life in portable devices by minimizing wasted energy during voltage step-down compared to linear alternatives.
Industrial Control Logic
Providing stable 5V rails for microcontrollers and logic circuits from 12V or 24V industrial supply buses.
Point-of-Load Regulation
Local voltage conversion on PCBs where space is limited and thermal management is a concern.

Getting Started

To use this module, connect the input voltage to pin 1, ground to pin 2, and the 5V output to pin 3. While the module is highly integrated, adding external input and output capacitors as recommended in the datasheet can further reduce ripple and improve EMI performance. No software or firmware configuration is required for operation.
