Overview

The SFH 9206 is a reflective optical sensor that combines a 940nm infrared emitter with a silicon NPN phototransistor in a single surface-mount package. It is designed to detect the presence or movement of objects by measuring the light reflected back to the detector, with an optimal operating range between 1mm and 5mm. The device features an integrated daylight filter to reduce interference from ambient light sources.

Why Choose This Part

The SFH 9206 provides electrical isolation between the emitter and detector, allowing for flexible circuit design and noise immunity. Its 6-SOIC surface-mount footprint and MSL Level 4 compliance make it suitable for automated assembly, while the built-in daylight cut-off filter ensures reliable performance in varied lighting conditions.

Applications

Limit Switching
Detecting the end-of-travel position for mechanical arms or sliding mechanisms in office automation.
Incremental Encoding
Sensing reflective marks on a rotating disk to determine motor speed or angular position.
Object Detection
Identifying the presence of paper in printers or media in dispensing machines.
Proximity Sensing
Triggering system events when a surface comes within the 1mm to 5mm detection window.

Getting Started

To use the SFH 9206, connect the internal LED through a current-limiting resistor to maintain a forward current below 50mA and bias the phototransistor with a pull-up resistor to a maximum collector-emitter voltage of 16V. Measure the voltage drop at the collector node using an ADC or a digital input with a Schmitt trigger to detect changes in reflection. Ensure the sensing target is positioned within the 1mm to 5mm range for maximum signal-to-noise ratio.
