Overview

The SN65HVD230 is a high-speed CAN transceiver designed to operate from a 3.3V supply, making it ideal for systems using low-voltage microcontrollers. It supports data rates up to 1Mbps and provides the interface between the differential CAN bus lines and a CAN controller. This device is specifically engineered for operation in harsh environments, featuring 5V tolerant inputs and integrated protection against ESD and thermal overload.

Why Choose This Part

This transceiver stands out for its low 370uA standby current and 3V to 3.6V supply range, which eliminates the need for 5V rails in modern 3.3V digital designs. It features adjustable driver transition times to reduce EMI and includes a high input impedance that allows up to 120 nodes on a single bus. The SOIC-8 package and 5V tolerant I/O simplify integration with a wide variety of microprocessors.

Applications

Industrial Automation
Utilized in DeviceNet and CANopen networks for communication between programmable logic controllers and industrial sensors.
Automotive Aftermarket Systems
Used in vehicle telematics and diagnostic tools that interface with the standard OBD-II CAN bus.
Distributed Control Systems
Provides reliable messaging between nodes in building automation and solar inverter arrays.

Getting Started

To evaluate this part, use a standard SOIC-8 breakout board or a dedicated CAN transceiver module. Connect the TXD and RXD pins to your microcontroller's CAN peripheral and place a 120-ohm termination resistor across the CANH and CANL lines at the bus ends. Transition times can be tuned by connecting a resistor from the Rs pin (Pin 8) to ground.
