Overview

The SN75176B is a versatile, half-duplex differential bus transceiver designed for bidirectional data communication on multipoint transmission lines. It combines a 3-state differential line driver and a differential input line receiver, both operating from a single 5V supply. This device is an industry-standard solution for RS-485 and RS-422 networks, offering robust performance in electrically noisy industrial environments.

Why Choose This Part

The SN75176B features a high receiver input impedance of 12k ohms and a wide common-mode input voltage range of -7V to 12V, ensuring reliable operation despite ground potential shifts. It includes built-in thermal shutdown protection and current limiting for both positive and negative driver outputs, providing essential durability for field-deployed hardware.

Applications

Industrial Fieldbus Networks
Used as the physical layer interface for Modbus RTU, Profibus, and other RS-485 based industrial protocols.
Long-Distance Data Links
Reliable data transmission over twisted-pair cabling for distances exceeding 1000 meters in point-to-point or multipoint configurations.
Motor Control Feedback
Transmitting high-speed encoder data from motors to controllers in environments with high electromagnetic interference.
Building Automation
Connecting HVAC controllers, lighting panels, and security sensors across large commercial facilities.

Getting Started

To use the SN75176B, connect the DE and RE pins to a microcontroller GPIO to toggle between transmit and receive modes. Ensure a 120-ohm termination resistor is placed at the furthest ends of the RS-485 bus to minimize signal reflections. Use a 0.1uF ceramic bypass capacitor close to the VCC pin (pin 8) to maintain signal integrity during high-speed switching.
