Overview

The SN75176BDR is a differential bus transceiver designed for bidirectional data communication on multipoint bus transmission lines. It combines a 3-state differential line driver and a differential input line receiver, both of which operate from a single 5V power supply. This industry-standard IC is compliant with ANSI TIA/EIA-422-B and TIA/EIA-485-A standards, making it a staple for robust serial communication in noisy environments.

Why Choose This Part

The device features high receiver input impedance (12k ohm minimum) and 50mV typical hysteresis to ensure reliable signal integrity in noisy industrial settings. It includes thermal shutdown and current limiting for both positive and negative driver outputs, providing protection against bus contention or faults.

Applications

RS-485 Networks
Enabling long-distance serial communication between multiple nodes in industrial automation systems.
Process Control Systems
Linking sensors and actuators to programmable logic controllers (PLCs) via differential signaling.
Building Automation
Interfacing HVAC, lighting, and security controllers over distributed wiring runs.
Motor Drive Feedback
Transmitting position and velocity data from encoders to motor controllers in high-EMI environments.

Getting Started

To use this transceiver, connect the A and B pins to the differential pair and use the RE and DE pins to control data direction for half-duplex operation. Place a 120-ohm termination resistor at the farthest ends of the bus to minimize signal reflections. For prototyping, this SOIC-8 package is commonly used with standard 0.05-inch pitch breakout boards or integrated into custom PCBs with bypass capacitors located close to the VCC pin.
