Overview

The SN75HVD3082EDR is a low-power half-duplex RS-485 transceiver designed for balanced data transmission at rates up to 200kbps. It features high levels of ESD protection up to 15kV and includes a fail-safe receiver that ensures a logic-high output state when the bus is open, shorted, or idle. Operating from a 5V supply, it is optimized for industrial environments requiring robust communication with minimal power consumption.

Why Choose This Part

The device offers a very low standby current of 1 microamp and a typical operating current of 425 microamps, making it ideal for power-sensitive applications. It provides robust protection against 15kV ESD strikes and includes glitch-free power-up/down circuitry to prevent erroneous data during transitions. Its wide common-mode voltage range of -7V to 12V allows for reliable operation despite ground potential differences between nodes.

Applications

Industrial Fieldbus Systems
Reliable data communication in Modbus, PROFIBUS, or proprietary RS-485 networks within factory environments.
Building Automation
Interconnecting HVAC controllers, lighting systems, and security panels over long cable runs.
Utility Metering
Low-speed data logging and remote monitoring of electricity, water, and gas meters.
Motor Control Feedback
Transmitting encoder or status data from motor drives to central controllers in noise-heavy settings.

Getting Started

To evaluate this transceiver, connect the A and B differential lines with a 120-ohm termination resistor at each end of the bus. High-speed switching noise can be minimized by placing a 0.1uF ceramic bypass capacitor close to the Vcc pin. Ensure the Driver Enable (DE) and Receiver Enable (RE) pins are correctly biased to control the half-duplex data flow from your microcontroller's UART.
