Overview

The SP3232EBEN-L/TR is a dual-channel RS-232 transceiver designed for portable and space-constrained applications. It operates from a wide supply voltage range of 3V to 5.5V and uses an efficient internal charge pump to generate RS-232 voltage levels from a single power source. This part is specifically rated for enhanced ESD protection and low power consumption, making it ideal for battery-operated systems.

Why Choose This Part

This transceiver features a very low supply current of 0.3mA (typical at 3.3V), extending battery life in mobile designs. It supports data rates up to 250kbps and includes a 300mV receiver hysteresis to ensure reliable data reception in noisy environments. The 16-SOIC package provides a balance between ease of assembly and board space efficiency.

Applications

Portable Diagnostic Tools
Used to provide RS-232 serial communication in handheld industrial testers and diagnostic equipment.
Embedded System Debugging
Acts as a level shifter between low-voltage microcontroller UARTs and legacy RS-232 serial ports.
Industrial Controllers
Facilitates robust serial data exchange in PLC modules and automation hardware operating at 3.3V or 5V.
Notebook and Palmtop Computers
Provides serial port connectivity for mobile computing devices where power efficiency is critical.

Getting Started

To implement this device, place four 0.1uF charge pump capacitors as close to the IC pins as possible to ensure stable voltage doubling and inversion. Connect the TTL/CMOS side to your microcontroller UART pins and the RS-232 side to your DB9 connector or serial interface. Ensure the power supply is decoupled with a 0.1uF capacitor to ground.
