Overview

The SP3485EN-L is a low-power, half-duplex RS-485 transceiver designed to operate from a single 3.3V supply. It is fully compliant with RS-485 and RS-422 serial protocols while supporting data rates up to 10Mbps. This component is an industry-standard solution for bridging TTL/CMOS logic to differential signaling in noise-sensitive environments.

Why Choose This Part

The transceiver features a very low shutdown current of 50uA and a typical unloaded operating current of 2mA, making it suitable for power-constrained applications. It supports a wide common-mode input voltage range from -7V to +12V and includes driver output short-circuit protection. The 3.3V operation eliminates the need for 5V rails often required by older RS-485 hardware.

Applications

Industrial Process Control
Ideal for connecting PLCs, sensors, and actuators in factory automation systems using the Modbus RTU protocol.
HVAC Systems
Used for communicating between thermostats, dampers, and air handling units in building management networks.
Security Systems
Enables long-distance serial communication for PTZ camera control and access control panel networking.
Level Translators
Acts as a 3.3V to differential signal converter for interfacing modern low-voltage MCUs with legacy RS-485 equipment.

Getting Started

To evaluate this part, use an 8-pin NSOIC to DIP adapter for breadboarding or integrate it directly into a PCB with 100nF decoupling capacitors. Ensure the DE (Driver Enable) and RE (Receiver Enable) pins are controlled by the MCU to manage half-duplex bus direction. For testing, standard USB-to-RS485 converters can be used to interface the SP3485EN-L with a PC terminal.
