Overview

The ST3232EBDR is a 3V to 5.5V powered RS-232 transceiver designed for high-performance serial communication in space-constrained and power-sensitive applications. It features a dual charge pump architecture that allows it to operate from a single supply while maintaining full RS-232 compatibility. This device includes enhanced ESD protection of up to +/-15 kV on its transmitter outputs and receiver inputs to ensure robust reliability in harsh environments.

Why Choose This Part

The ST3232EBDR offers a high data rate of up to 250kbps and integrated ESD protection, reducing the need for external TVS diodes. Its low power consumption and wide supply voltage range (3V to 5.5V) make it highly versatile for both legacy 5V systems and modern 3.3V low-power designs.

Applications

Industrial Control Systems
Providing reliable serial communication between PLCs, sensors, and human-machine interfaces in electrically noisy environments.
Battery-Powered Handheld Devices
Utilizing the low 0.3mA typical supply current to extend battery life in portable diagnostic or maintenance tools.
Networking Equipment
Serving as the console port interface for routers, switches, and servers requiring standard RS-232 signal levels.
Embedded System Debugging
Interfacing low-voltage microcontrollers with legacy serial peripherals or PC COM ports for field diagnostics.

Getting Started

To integrate this part, place 0.1uF capacitors on the four charge pump pins and the Vcc bypass pin as close to the IC as possible. For prototyping, the 16-SOIC package can be used with a standard SOIC-16 to DIP adapter on a breadboard. Ensure the logic-side signals match your MCU voltage levels, as the transceiver translates these to the higher RS-232 bipolar voltages.
