Overview

The TC7660CPA is a charge pump DC-to-DC voltage converter that performs supply voltage conversions from positive to negative for input voltages ranging from 1.5V to 10V. It requires only two external electrolytic capacitors to provide a full -1.5V to -10V output from a positive supply, or can be configured as a voltage doubler. With a low typical operating current of 80uA, it is a highly efficient solution for generating negative rails in low-power systems.

Why Choose This Part

The device eliminates the need for external inductors, reducing both EMI and board complexity. It features improved 3kV HBM ESD protection and does not require an external diode for high-voltage operation within its 10V range. Its 8-pin PDIP package is ideal for through-hole prototyping and maintenance of legacy industrial equipment.

Applications

RS-232 Negative Power Supply
Generating the negative voltage rails required for RS-232 line drivers from a standard 5V logic supply.
Bipolar Op-Amp Rail Generation
Converting a single +5V or +9V supply into a dual +/-5V or +/-9V rail for precision analog circuitry.
Data Acquisition Systems
Providing local negative bias for sensors and ADCs in instrumentation where only a positive battery source is available.

Getting Started

To get started, connect two 10uF external capacitors between the C+ and C- pins and the Vout pin respectively. For input voltages below 3.5V, connect the LV (Low Voltage) pin to GND; for voltages above 3.5V, leave the LV pin open to ensure proper internal oscillator operation. Ensure the output current load does not exceed the 20mA maximum rating to maintain voltage regulation.

Also Consider

MAX660 Maxim Integrated / Analog Devices - Offers a higher output current capacity of up to 100mA compared to the 20mA limit of the TC7660.
