Overview

The TCAN1042HVDR is a high-speed CAN transceiver that supports both classical CAN and CAN FD data rates up to 5 Mbps. It features integrated 3V to 5V level shifting on the digital IO pins and provides robust bus fault protection up to plus or minus 70V. This device is designed to handle the demanding electrical environments of automotive and industrial networks while maintaining low power consumption in standby mode.

Why Choose This Part

This transceiver offers superior protection with +/-16 kV HBM ESD and +/-70 V bus fault capability, reducing the need for external clamping components. The integrated VIO pin allows for direct interfacing with 3.3V microcontrollers without external level shifters. Its low-power standby mode, consuming only 17 uA, is critical for applications with strict battery life or ignition-off requirements.

Applications

Automotive In-Vehicle Networking
Used in body electronics, gateways, and powertrain systems requiring high-speed CAN FD communication.
Industrial Automation
Ideal for CANopen or DeviceNet protocols in factory automation where high EMC robustness is required.
High-Voltage Systems
Suitable for systems with potential ground offsets or DC bus shorts due to its 70V bus fault protection.
Battery Management Systems
Provides reliable communication between cell supervisors and the main BMS controller in EV or ESS applications.

Getting Started

To evaluate this part, use the TCAN1042DEVM evaluation module which provides a standard header for logic interfacing and screw terminals for the CAN bus. Ensure a 120-ohm termination resistor is present at both ends of the physical bus. Connect the VCC pin to 5V and the VIO pin to your microcontroller's IO voltage level (3.3V or 5V) for proper operation.
