Overview

The TMC2208-LA is a monolithic, highly integrated stepper motor driver designed for silent operation and precision control. It supports supply voltages from 5.5V to 36V and can deliver up to 1.2A of continuous output current per coil. Utilizing proprietary StealthChop2 and SpreadCycle technologies, it ensures near-silent motor movement while maintaining high dynamic performance.

Why Choose This Part

The driver features MicroPlyer interpolation for 256 microstep resolution from a standard step/direction input, resulting in exceptionally smooth motion. Integrated StealthChop2 technology eliminates audible motor hum at low speeds, while the UART interface allows for extensive tuning and diagnostics via OTP memory.

Applications

Desktop 3D Printers
Ideal for axes and extruder motors where silent operation is critical for office or home environments.
Medical Laboratory Automation
Used in liquid handling robots and diagnostic equipment that require high precision and low vibration.
CCTV and Surveillance
Ensures smooth, quiet pan and tilt movements for security cameras without introducing motor noise into audio recordings.
Office Automation
Provides low-noise drive solutions for scanners, printers, and document finishing equipment.

Getting Started

To begin development, interface the TMC2208 via its STEP/DIR pins for basic motion or use the single-wire UART for advanced configuration of current and chopper settings. Engineers should ensure the 28-VFQFN exposed pad is properly soldered to a thermal ground plane to manage heat at higher current levels. Evaluation can be simplified using the TMC2208-EVAL board or silent-stepstick modules.
