Overview

The TMC5072-LA is a high-performance dual-axis stepper motor controller and driver IC integrated into a single QFN-48 package. It combines two flexible SixPoint ramp generators with powerful drivers capable of delivering up to 1.1A RMS per motor from a 5V to 20V supply. This component is specifically designed for applications requiring extremely quiet operation and precise motion control without the need for external power MOSFETs.

Why Choose This Part

The integration of StealthChop allows for nearly silent motor operation at low speeds, while SpreadCycle provides high-speed current control without resonance issues. Its internal SixPoint ramp generators significantly reduce the computational load on the system microcontroller by handling complex acceleration curves autonomously. Furthermore, the small 7x7mm QFN package minimizes PCB footprint for dual-axis designs.

Applications

CCTV Pan-Tilt Systems
Enables silent, jitter-free positioning of camera gimbals using StealthChop technology.
Medical Laboratory Automation
Ideal for liquid handling robots and sample analyzers requiring compact, dual-axis motion with high microstepping resolution.
Office Automation and 3D Printing
Provides dual-motor drive for X/Y stages with integrated ramp controllers to offload real-time tasks from the host MCU.
Antenna Positioning
Manages precise elevation and azimuth movements with built-in encoder interfaces for closed-loop feedback.

Getting Started

Engineers can evaluate the chip using the TMC5072-EVAL-KIT, which interfaces with the Landungsbruecke connection board. Software development is supported through the TMCL-IDE, which allows for real-time parameter tuning and script generation. Communication with the host is typically handled via the SPI interface for configuration and motion commands.
