TITPS61200
Overview
The TPS61200 is a high-efficiency synchronous boost converter designed for low-voltage power sources like single-cell alkaline, NiCd, or NiMH batteries. It features a remarkably low startup voltage of 0.5V and can operate down to 0.3V once running, making it ideal for extracting maximum energy from depleted cells. The device also includes a unique down-conversion mode that maintains regulation even when the input voltage exceeds the target output voltage.
Why Choose This Part
The TPS61200 offers a 1.2A switch current limit in a compact 3x3mm VSON package, providing high power density for portable designs. Its integrated 'Power Save Mode' maintains high efficiency during light loads, while the forced fixed-frequency mode allows for low-noise operation in sensitive analog or RF applications. Additionally, the integrated load disconnect prevents battery drain by completely isolating the output from the input during shutdown.

Getting Started
Designers can evaluate the chip using the TPS61200EVM-179 evaluation module, which allows for testing the adjustable output and power save features. When designing the PCB, minimize the area of the power ground and use a short, wide trace for the feedback loop to ensure stability at the 1.25MHz to 1.65MHz switching frequency. Refer to the datasheet to program the undervoltage lockout (UVLO) threshold using an external resistor divider on the EN pin.
