Overview

The TRS3232EIDR is a dual-channel RS-232 line driver and receiver designed for high-performance serial communication between 3V to 5.5V systems and standard RS-232 peripherals. It features integrated ESD protection on the bus pins and utilizes a dual charge-pump architecture to maintain RS-232 output levels while operating from a single low-voltage supply. This transceiver is an industry-standard solution for bridging modern microcontrollers with legacy industrial equipment.

Why Choose This Part

It offers significant design flexibility by supporting a wide 3V to 5.5V supply range and 5V-tolerant logic inputs even when running at 3.3V. The integration of high-level ESD protection on the RS-232 pins reduces the need for external TVS diodes, while the low standby current of 300uA aids in power-sensitive designs.

Applications

Industrial PLC Programming
Used as a level shifter between 3.3V logic controllers and 12V RS-232 serial ports found on industrial automation equipment.
Legacy Peripheral Interfacing
Connects modern embedded systems to serial-based receipt printers, barcode scanners, and legacy modems.
Battery-Powered Diagnostic Tools
The low 0.3mA typical supply current and wide voltage range make it ideal for portable serial data loggers.

Getting Started

Implementation requires four external 0.1uF capacitors for the internal charge pump and inverter to function correctly. Ensure the capacitors are placed as close to the VCC, V+, V-, and C1/C2 pins as possible to minimize ripple. For evaluation, these ICs are commonly found on 16-SOIC breakout boards or can be prototyped using a standard RS-232 DB9 connector for the bus side.
