VSC8502XML

MCHPVSC8502XML

Microchip Technology
Telecom IC Ethernet 135-QFN (12x12)
Active518 in stock

Overview

The VSC8502XML is a dual-port Gigabit Ethernet PHY designed for power-sensitive and space-constrained networking applications. It supports two independent 10/100/1000BASE-T interfaces and utilizes a RGMII MAC interface with integrated timing compensation to simplify high-speed PCB design. This IC is optimized for synchronous Ethernet and includes hardware-level support for Ring Resiliency and fast link failure indication.

Why Choose This Part

This PHY features integrated line-side termination and a voltage mode line driver, which significantly reduces the external bill of materials and board space. It incorporates VeriPHY cable diagnostics for remote troubleshooting and supports IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet to lower power dissipation to approximately 1198mW during typical 1000BASE-T traffic.

Applications

Industrial Automation
High-reliability Gigabit Ethernet connectivity for PLCs and industrial controllers requiring fast link failure detection in less than 1ms.
Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE)
Telecommunications infrastructure and timing-sensitive networks that require frequency synchronization across the Ethernet physical layer.
Smart Grid Infrastructure
Utility monitoring and control systems utilizing EcoEthernet v2.0 for reduced power consumption during low traffic periods.
Digital Signage
Media distribution systems requiring dual-port connectivity and Wake-on-LAN (WOL) for remote power management.

Getting Started

Designers should refer to the Microchip VSC8502 documentation for RGMII layout guidelines, specifically focusing on the 0.65mm pitch QFN package thermal pad requirements. Evaluation of the PHY can be performed using Microchip hardware development kits that support the VSC85xx family of Gigabit copper PHYs. Configuration is typically managed via the MDIO/MDC management interface.
