Overview

The XB3-24Z8UM-J is a Digi XBee 3 Zigbee 3.0 module designed for low-power mesh networking in the 2.4 GHz spectrum. Based on the Silicon Labs EFR32MG SoC, this compact Micro-form-factor module includes 1024 KB of Flash and 128 KB of RAM for local processing. This specific variant features a U.FL connector for use with external antennas and supports Zigbee, 802.15.4, and Bluetooth Low Energy protocols.

Why Choose This Part

The module offers a compact 13mm x 19mm footprint while delivering an 8dBm output power and high sensitivity of -103dBm. It simplifies design-in by supporting UART, SPI, and I2C interfaces along with 15 GPIO pins and a 10-bit ADC. With a shutdown current of just 2uA, it is highly optimized for battery-operated end devices.

Applications

Smart Lighting Systems
Building mesh networks for commercial and residential lighting control with low latency.
Industrial Sensor Networks
Connecting remote industrial sensors to a gateway using the Zigbee protocol's robust mesh topology.
Home Automation Gateways
Acting as a coordinator for Zigbee-certified smart home devices like locks and thermostats.

Getting Started

To begin development, use the Digi XBee Configuration and Test Utility (XCTU) to configure network parameters and firmware. For hardware prototyping, the XBee 3 Micro Development Kit provides the necessary interface boards and headers. Developers can utilize MicroPython for on-module logic or interface with an external host MCU via serial commands.
