Overview

The nRF905 is a single-chip sub-GHz radio transceiver designed for low-power wireless applications in the 433, 868, and 915MHz ISM bands. It features an integrated ShockBurst engine that automatically handles preamble and CRC generation, significantly reducing the computational burden on the host microcontroller. Operating between 1.9V and 3.6V, it provides a simple SPI interface for configuration and data transfer.

Why Choose This Part

The integrated ShockBurst technology simplifies firmware development by managing packet framing and error detection in hardware. It offers excellent power efficiency with a low 9mA current draw at -10dBm output power and a 2.5uA shutdown mode, extending battery life in remote nodes. The device also simplifies RF design by providing on-chip matching options for the antenna interface.

Applications

Wireless Alarm Systems
Ideal for battery-operated security sensors that require long-range penetration through walls using sub-GHz frequencies.
Industrial Telemetry
Enables remote monitoring of equipment in environments where 2.4GHz interference is high and data rates under 50kbps are sufficient.
Home Automation
Used in smart lighting, HVAC controls, and appliance networking where low power consumption and reliable sub-GHz propagation are required.
Remote Keyless Entry (RKE)
Suitable for secure, low-latency entry systems and automotive remote control applications.

Getting Started

To begin development, interface the nRF905 with any microcontroller via a standard 4-wire SPI bus and utilize the dedicated carrier detect (CD), address match (AM), and data ready (DR) pins for interrupt-driven communication. Engineers typically use the nRF905-EVKIT or third-party breakout boards to prototype antenna layouts and test range performance in the 433/868/915MHz bands.
