Android Vs Embedded system

June 22, 2013

Hi Friends

After the announcement of Android@Home , now we can connect our embedded platform to Android device through the newly released ADK protocol.Benifit of the integration of android system (Mobile,Tablet,or dedicated android device)is more ,some of them I will list here,

  • 1.Device is cost effective and commonly available
  • 2.Very nice and attractive user interface can be utilized for embedded platform.
  • 3.Multimedia capabilities can be used for audio alert and announcements easly.
  • 4.Database creation and manipulation is easy with(DBMS) sql light vertion available with android platform.
  • 5.High end communication facilities like, GPRS,GSM-telephony,WiFi,Bluetooth available. so our embedded system    can communicate with the world and exchange the data, this can be achieved with less programming effort.
  • 6.High processing speed and software (library) support will help for complicated large embedded systems.
  • 7.In built sensors and other hardware can be used.
  • 8.Programme development is supported by freely available SDK,NDK,ADK packages.

When using Android for embedded purpose ,two types of design can be adopted,

  • 1.Ready made android device like mobile phone or Tablet can be used as the Front -End unit and actual low level interfacing can be achieved through any microcontroller, bothe can communicate through USB or bluetooth.
  • 2.In the second approch a dedicated android based system can develop , it is not so easy -modify the source code of android for our new hardware desighn and port to the new system.Android is mainly working on ARM architecture.and android is a layer above the actual OS Linux .So our application has to be integrate with Linux and android platform. It is a great job.If we can implement like this ,there is no need of separate two system (Android front-end and Microcontroller based low level integrating system). Now a good news from Beagle board , They released low cost 1GHz ARM cortex A8 based small mother board for embedded application with eLinux full fledged OS,it will work on Android also.Thae hardware contains many features like GPIO,I2C,UART,USB,LAN,onboard 2GB flash, microSD,microHDMI etc.It may suit our purpose, both high end and low level provided in a single platform.

Read more from Beagleboard and try it , all the best
