SPI simple explanation

I was thinking of trying a project using SPI but after looking on the net
for info about it I was hoping someone might be able to clarifiy something.

The way I understand it in a nutshell is you have a master and slave(s).
The master sends out a command to a slave telling the slave to listen up
because I want to talk to you. The slave then listens to the commands from
the master, executes them and then sends a command to the slave that says
"I'm done". The master then sends a command that says stop listening or
sends another command until he is finished.

If this is correct then I'm assuming the slave can not send a command to the
master that says "I want to talk to you so listen to me". Is this, although
simplified, correct?
