Hi, I need some QVGA or better, backlit (preferably LED), color, full graphic, (have I omitted any adjectives?) LCD touchpanels in small quantities (like a dozen). I'm currently using some 10" panels but they are just too damn big. Ideally, I'm looking for ~5" diag, 4:3 aspect ratio. I've tried DX but their search engine sucks, big time! You end up "browsing" their entire catalog -- only the order in which the items are presented changes! :-/ I don't care if they're pulls... this is for a one-off project (prototype). But, such a low quantity might make that option impractical, as well. Any suggestions as to possible *devices* that would have suitable displays? The 5" size seems to put it beyond the cell phone market. And, the 4:3 aspect ration seems to rule out most tablets. Perhaps a small DVD player (though even those seem to opt for larger/wider screens...)? Alternatively, any other "surplus"/closeout sites I might want to grep? (hopefully with *capable* search engines) Thx, --don

Too "short" by about an inch. I've been picking up random bits of consumer kit to ascertain what size/shape displays they use. Most of the game consoles are either too short (aspect ratio) or too *small* (overall). The same applies to cell phones. And, tablets seem to have adopted the widescreen format.> Disclaimer: I haven't used either of these, so read the associated > comments and also check over at Sparkfun's forum for hints and notes.BTW, DX has similar units for half the price...

Following the link gives me US$ prices only. Not what I'd call an international player... Peter

Hi Peter, On 7/1/2011 3:25 AM, Peter Dickerson wrote:>>>> BTW, DX has similar units for half the price... >>> >>> Who is DX ?? >> >> Sorry, "Deal eXtreme". Since US$ are all *I* am interested in, I've never gone looking for how/if to change the currency! As to my "international" claim (aside from their physical location in China -- at least that's where the parcels I receive appear to be shipped from), the front page shows (lower right corner): --------------------------- Recent Orders Digital Wood Moisture Meter (1 x 9V) ship to:Finland RS002 Wired Shutter Release for Canon 1D/1Ds/30D/20D/10D (1M-Length) ship to:Lithuania 5mW 532nm Green Laser Module (3V 11.9mm) ship to:SPAIN 6mm BB White Plastic Bullets (2000-Pack) ship to:ISRAEL --------------------------- Of course, this can all be delusional on their part. (Why?) But, if these represent the most recent orders, note that "USA" isn't one of them... By contrast, if Digikey had a similar feature on their web page, I would fully expect *every* sale to be listed as USA. [for those who've never heard of DX, you might also want to look at alibaba -- though *that* scares me! Talk about "bazaar"...]

Think in terms of a 2-gang junction box (light switch, etc.). These are intended primarily as little "control pads" to turn things on and off or view status of *specific* things (i.e., you won't have 15 different "things" displayed simultaneously). Or, think in terms of a "universal remote control" that is GUI based. I.e., right now, it is configured to allow you to control your DVD player. Later, it might be configured to control your FM radio, etc. As you get larger, it detracts from the device's utility (because of the temptation to put more cruft on the screen). It also becomes impractical to use/deploy (e.g., imagine 10" diagonal screens placed at the entry to each room in your house... they start to take up lots of wall space and draw too much attention to themselves). 5" seems a good size. Maybe 4" would work as well -- it depends on how "intimate" you have to become with the panel in order to interact with it. Ideally, you want it to be a casual interaction (like the way you interact with a light switch) instead of a more *intense* interaction (like the way you interact with a *spreadsheet*). E.g., the PSP panel that Rich suggested is about the right width but it's so "short" (vertically) that it tends to draw you in too much to interact with (small) *portions* of it. [BTW, have you a *name* so I can greet you properly in my replies? "Hi 1" just doesn't cut it! :> ]

Think in terms of a 2-gang junction boxSounds like a 2.8" display is all you can fit. Mounting will take up some room on the back of the panel. I found some LCDs on the DX web site. ( I spent way tooo much time "just looking" ) From your later comments, they seem to be reliable and deliver what they say they are going to deliver. Are the products you have purchased very good quality ? The prices are cheap, but are the products also cheap ? hamilton
