We want to make a portable device for reading some text. It is
made for ourselves, and as a practice of course. So we want get a low
cost on hardware. Some one suggest that MSP430 should work fine, but i
don't know whether it can afford the loads. It seems that lacking of
support free os for MSP430 is another problem. Is there any better
choice?Any help would be appreciated.

What do you need an OS for ? Rene -- Ing.Buero R.Tschaggelar - http://www.ibrtses.com & commercial newsgroups - http://www.talkto.net

Contiki, http://www.sics.se/~adam/contiki/ports/ . I don't know what you mean by "afford the loads"..

To be able to read text from ? so any microcontroller + lcd should do. Or the device is going to be able to read text ? Philips lpc2xxx arm 7 chips <http://www.semiconductors.philips.com/products/microcontrollers/32bit/index.html> Cheap boards here http://www.lpctools.com/ More boards http://www.lpctools.com/ http://bbs.circuitcellar.com/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=25 Lots of other arm 7 based chips out there. Oki , Samsung, Analog , Atmel to name a very few. You can buy clone palm devices (based on dragon ball) for as little as US$10 in quantity. Could also use an fpga. See fpga4fun.com New spartan3e fpga starter kits are supposed to be available sometime in the next few weeks from xilinx. These have an lcd , + ethernet + usb + vga output + uart +io etc Alex

I don't understand. If you are making a single unit, then unit cost shouldn't be a significant concern. If it is for practice, you might want to choose a target which is appropriate to what you are practicing for.

What do you mean by afford the loads? It seems that lacking of support free os for MSP430 is another problem. Operating systems aren't needed for most simple jobs. There may be some inexpensive RTOSs for MSP430 -- I don't know. Is there any better choice? There could be, but without your criteria, it is impossible to know. -- Thad

What is "reading some text" ?? Is this an optical device ??

Practice ??? Is this a student project ???

I should control the LCD myself without OS
Thank you, good site.

it means that would the MSP430 work correct or overworked?

I am very interest in the palm clone board, is there any websites on it?
like a ebook reader.
I am on my way to start learning it.
