multilevel menu

I'm going to make in C  multilevel menu on ATMEGA  + LCD 2*16 + Key: UP,
DOWN, ENTER, ESC.
Any sugestions?

I've been playing with LCD's recently and I've found that a Finite State
Automaton is a good way to go.
