Can I2C and SMBus get along on LPC2468?

I am running v2.89 uCOS-II on an LPC2468 based device that shares an I2C bus with I2C devices (RTC, I/O expanders) and an SMBus smart battery. I am having communications problems with the battery.

The I2C source in the port had some issues that needed addressed. Fixing the I2C ISR cleared up the bulk of the problem. However, there is still an occasional problem with reading the battery. I am pretty sure the battery is using the SMBus timeout and I have tried to sense and handle it with a Stop condition. I just can't get reliable battery communications.

Can anyone share their experiences of how to successfully share an I2C bus with I2C devices and an SMBus smart battery?
