Hi Sam,

Of course SAR could be realized, but what it would take would either :
- be too many components, as you'd need a DAC-like function.
  Either you'd be using the MSP430's DAC, and that one has an ADC
  on board anyway.
- Or you'd use PWM as the DAC, and to be accurate enough you'd need
  a good deal of active filtering (opamps) to make for a clean SAR
  ref voltage for the conversion.

There's MSP430s that are small enough with ADC,  I'd think
or if speed is not an issue, then a dual slope setup with the comparator
would do the trick.
Unless you have other reasons cost wise.
In that case, google for "R-2R" ladders to do DACs, and how successive
approximation works ?
