pic to gsm sms transceiver

Hi,

pic/sms/alarm

Now I know its probably been done before, and I bet we all could have
a use for one, anyone fancy a group build?

I have a real need, I live in a ''poor'' area and the local
yobs/thugs(translate as appropriate) have just decided to steal my
eldest sons motorbike he uses for work, needles to say the ones who
stole it don't work........

Made me think, esp as they seem to target cars and no one responds to
a car alarm, that a phone buried inside that could either dial back or
Sm's and would be a good idea, even if just say the power was out and
the freezer is defrosting my meat!

I thought this about a year ago and never got started, but this recent
problem has brought it home.

Mobile phones are now 10 a penny (well almost) and this group has
people in it with much more stored knowledge than me.

I could achieve it, and I know I could have it working inside 6
months, but I think it should be possible to knock that down to a
month with a few of us knocking ideas around.

Should not take a great deal of computing power, say a 16f88, Or a
2550, as I envisaged connecting it via usb I can also write a small
app on the PC to let me know if I have had any important email etc

Most phones use PDU mode so predefined strings could be stored in
eeprom to save on code space, and if as above the bigger pic is used,
very simple to update the stored numbers as just plug into pc, run the
config software, type in new number, put back on site etc.
Old phones could handle 5v on the rxd/txd pins, newer one's are mostly
3.6 powered so maybe just a resistor divider to stop toasting them.
If I write it, like I said it will take me ages, and will have to be
in pic basic as I don't fancy assembler as such a complicated first
assembler project.
