Pic16f877 and a Harddisk

Started by arjanmeameijer June 11, 2003
Hello

Are there some people with experience in connecting a harddisk to a
microcontroller in C. Hope you can tell me what the trickie points
are. and maybe some good sites with information.

Thanks

Arjan

Well, it depends on the microcontroller - the medium range PICs don't
have enough memory to read a single sector. For example, the 16F877
has 368 bytes of RAM total - pretty useless unless off chip RAM is
added and that isn't very easy either - well, it isn't transparent
but it COULD be done.

Look at http://www.pjrc.com/tech/8051/ide/ to see it done with an
8051.

This could be done. TRy this link http://wiredtotheweb.com/developer/ide/

where you can find an example. Ok, at the other end is an embedded
computer, but don't worry, just check the microc part.
Also, you can find the 40 pin IDE interface semnifications on the
internet, they are very simple.

Good luck
