Multi microcontroller system design

hello!,

I am designing a system that requires multiple MCUs. Can somebody
give insights in design issues and suggestions? Especially in pcb
prototyping. thanks!

Where I used to work I designed a high-speed seriasl comms hub with four
Atmel '2313 MCUs interfaced via bit-banged SPI to a mid-range PIC with
hardware SPI. It was prototyped on a double-sided PCB with no problems,
apart from using the wrong SM footprint (too narrow) for the '2313s. I did
manage to get them on their pads by bending the leads underneath the
package. The software was a bit tricky but I didn't have to write it, it was
really someone else's project and I just helped by designing the hardware.
